Spectacular Mascherone in Vicenza stone, depicting Mercury (Hermes), god of Roman mythology with many characteristics: he was considered the protector of trade, travelers, thieves, eloquence, athletics, transformations of all kinds, speed, dexterity, pharmacy. Provenance Venice, private collection. Mascherone can be used as a fountain mouth or simply as a wall mask. Work belonging to a large collection of mythological masks (Minerva, Hercules, Bacchus, Venus, Diana, etc. etc.). As it has amazing speed, is often depicted with wings for this feature was the messenger of the gods. Other fundamental symbols of Mercury are the petasus, headdress of travelers, and the caduceus, physical representation of good and evil of men, held in balance by the wand of the god Hermes, who controls the balance. The wings symbolize the primacy of intelligence, which is placed above the matter in order to dominate it through knowledge. Lot of extreme quality, more unique than rare. The work depicts the Greek god Apollo, who has just killed the serpent Python with the arrows of his bow. His muscles, still tense, hint at the exertion following the battle against Python, while his ringlet hair falls fluidly over his neck and elegantly gathered on his head, which is encircled by strophium, an ornamental band symbolizing a deity or king. The god is entirely nude, with the exception of his shoulder quiver, sandals, and cloak wrapped around his right shoulder, which spills over his left arm and part of his back.
