Oil painting on canvas depicting Portrait of a Young Singer, attributed to Anthoni Schoonjans (1655 - 1726). The subject effigy, he shows himself to the public with the hairstyle discolored by a backflow of wind which has just discolored his hair, shaken the lapel of his jacket and the collar of his shirt, while he holds the sheet of the sheet music of which he lets the author show through a few letters in indistinguishable upper case. The expression taken by the young singer, with his mouth open when taking the right song intonation and looking upwards, leaves the viewer in doubt whether the young person with this singular gaze is looking for the perfect note or is in ecstasy. The Singer wears a damask fabric farsetto with puffed sleeves, from which emerges a shirt with a long and soft collar, tightened at the waist by a strap. The left hand shows through the flags under the jacket, giving the feeling of a fairly relaxed position, as if the youngster is improvising a song with the hand in the pocket and the right side resting with the elbow on a railing. The forearm, in a gadget, absent-mindedly surrounds a soft woolly fabric, presumably a hood, which falls profusely forward. The straight, pinched to stop a leaf, features a crumpled cuff that blends well with the collar and lapel. Given the attributive hypothesis the work is to be attributed with certainty to the hand of the Flemish painter Anthoni Schoonjans said Parhasius, in fact, it finds multiple similarities with certain works of the painter, such as "The Concert" in the private collection, where the model for the central figure of the painting appears to be the same as our beautiful canvas. The painting is in good conservative condition, with some light restorations scattered between the singer's farsetto and on the light background of the work. 20th century gilded wood frame. This interesting work depicting Vanitas is characterized by a strong chiaroscuro contrast, which highlights the shape of the skull. The artist is undoubtedly influenced by the vanitas vanitatum", "vanity of vanities", taken from the Bible (Ecclesiastes, 1), comes from "vanus", literally "empty", "caducous" and, in the pictorial field, uses the concept of still life characterized by the presence of objects or symbolic indicators that allude to the precariousness of existence, the inexorability of the passage of time, the ephemeral nature of worldly goods. It is an iconography that at the beginning has moralizing finality, it invites to abandon the pleasures and the venal desires in order to take care of the eternal salvation, and that subsequently, during the seventeenth century baroque, it will assume ambiguous characteristics, Yes, to sing the transience of life, whatever it may be, but at the same time, given its fragile nature, to grasp the day before eternity comes into being.
